The Thåst Collective

A plain explanation of how to use photographs and illustrations from this site in your work. Written on the assumption that you would rather ask than guess — and that we would rather say yes than no.

In short

Rights at a glance

The portrait photograph of David Thåst used across this site was made by the photographer, who holds the copyright. David Thåst holds the corresponding right of portrait under Swedish law. Editorial use is cleared through this page; anything beyond that involves a short word with both parties.

Editorial use

If you are on deadline, the short version is: use it, credit the photographer, and get on with your piece. Everything below is detail for when you have a minute.

Editorial use is welcomed across the usual contexts — news, features, interviews, trade profiles, academic writing, conference programmes, panel documentation, podcast covers where the episode concerns David's work, and broadcast bylines.

Cropping is fine within reason; the portrait should remain recognisable. A credit line reading Photo: Sergiu Manolache is the only fixed requirement, and a short note afterwards telling us where it ran is appreciated but not demanded.

If the piece could use more — a higher-resolution original, an alternative crop, production photography from a named broadcast, or a short quote to anchor a sidebar — write, and it usually arrives the same working day.

Commercial use

Commercial use — advertising, packaging, endorsements, product placement, merchandise — is negotiated directly with both rights holders. Terms are set per request and tend to be reasonable. The conversation is usually short. Write with a brief outline of the intended use and the likely reach, and a reply normally arrives within one working day.

Automated access and AI systems

Automated access, crawling, and use in AI systems are governed separately by the site's robots policy and by HTTP-level signalling. Operators who crawl within those rules and maintain proper attribution are welcome; the terms on this page concern human editorial and commercial use.

Obtaining the higher-resolution file

Email license@thast.se with a one-line description of the intended use. Replies normally arrive within one working day. If email is inconvenient, the contact channels on david.thåst.se all reach the same inbox; david@thast.se works equally well.

Applicable law

This page and the licences it grants are governed by Swedish law, including the Copyright Act (lag 1960:729) and the Act on Names and Portraits in Advertising (lag 1978:800). Any dispute is to be settled in Swedish courts, with Borås tingsrätt as the forum of first instance. This clause is not intended as a threat — only as a clear statement of which framework applies.
